The White House has unveiled the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a cybersecurity safety label for internet-connected consumer devices. Starting later this year, smart products in the U.S. will feature this label, helping buyers determine their safety. Designed for devices such as home security cameras, TVs, and smart appliances, the label indicates compliance with NIST's security standards, including strong passwords and software updates.

Consumers can scan a QR code next to the label for additional security information, like changing default passwords and accessing automatic updates. This initiative, backed by major companies like Amazon and Google, aims to educate consumers and encourage the production of more secure devices. The program, officially launching in 2025, will highlight products with the Trust Mark in stores like BestBuy and Amazon.

In December 2024, the FCC approved 11 companies as Cybersecurity Label Administrators responsible for managing the program and certifying products. According to Justin Brookman from Consumer Reports, this mark will inform consumers about the manufacturer's commitment to software updates. Though voluntary, it is hoped that manufacturers will adopt this mark, providing consumers with a clear indication of cybersecurity standards.
